It’s Wednesday, June 3, 2015. The NHL Stanley Cup Final between the Chicago Blackhawks and the Tampa Bay Lightning will commence shortly after 8 pm eastern time. From the Western Conference, the Chicago Blackhawks are led by a Winnipeg, Manitoba native who is looking to host his third Stanley Cup. From the Eastern Conference, the Tampa Bay Lightning are led by a Markham, Ontario native who is hoping to hoist Lord Stanley’s Cup for the first time in his career. Both Jonathan Toews and Steven Stamkos are two outstanding hockey players that will be competing alongside their respective team for Lord Stanley’s Cup.
Drafted third overall in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, Jonathan Toews has had a fantastic career to look back upon. With already two Stanley Cup rings and two Olympic gold medals, Toews has been a cornerstone player in each of his championship outings.
Jonathan Toews, who is only 27 years-old has an all-around performance that shows his dedication to win. From excellence on the faceoff dot for possession to scoring crucial goals (two goals in game five against Anaheim to push the game to overtime), his complete 200-foot game shows why he is one of the top players to ever play the sport of hockey.
Toews has been a leader, ever since his days in junior with North Dakota in the NCAA and with Canada in the World Juniors. He has carried his leadership professionally as captain of the Chicago Blackhawks, knowing how to tame his teammates when times are tough, and he will be ready for the task of the 2015 Stanley Cup Finals.
The Markham, Ontario native Steven Stamkos has been a scoring machine in the regular season and a workhorse of a leader during the playoffs. Stamkos is the captain of a young Tampa Bay Lightning team that is learning the grind of the NHL Playoffs. With an excellent shot, Stamkos is a threat every time he touches the puck. He knows what it means to win (gold and silver medals with Canada’s junior team), and knows how it feels to lose (snubbed from 2010 Canadian Olympic team and could not play in 2014 Olympics because of his broken leg).
Both captains are tremendous leaders on and off the ice. Stamkos’ fire will only drive the Lightning to push for the Stanley Cup as the resilient team they have been all year. Jonathan Toews’ experience will only better Chicago’s attitude as they compete for their third Stanley Cup in five years.
As for who will win the Stanley Cup? Only time will tell!
