And so It Begins

The Toronto Maple Leafs traded Dion Phaneuf, Matt Frattin, Casey Bailey, Ryan Rupert, and Cody Donaghey to the Ottawa Senators for Jared Cowen, Colin Greening, Milan Michalek, Tobias Lindberg and a 2017 second-round pick.

The Ottawa Senators acquire an unpleasant seven-million dollar contract which expires in 2021. Phaneuf is a good second pairing defenceman who will likely play alongside Erik Karlsson. Look out for the Erik-Dion offensive punch on the powerplay.

With Matt Frattin and Casey Bailey, the Senators take on two expiring contracts for mediocre players. Ryan Rupert scored 12 points in 29 games with the Marlies, and will likely play with the Binghamton Senators. Cody Donaghey will continue to play with the Moncton Wildcats. He is a decent right shot defenceman who has scored 22 points in 36 games playing in the QMJHL.

The Toronto Maple Leafs acquire two chance players in Jared Cowen and Colin Greening. Both players are looking for a change of scenery to hopefully boost their career. Colin Greening, who played in the AHL, could be called up to be a decent third or fourth line left-winger who can hopefully find his way under Mike Babcock. Jared Cowen has a $3.1M cap hit until the end of 2016-17, and might play on the third pairing until his potential defensive partner Roman Polak is dealt to another team by the deadline.

Milan Michalek has not found a healthy season. Similar to Joffrey Lupul, Michalek has underperformed, and has only produced a lackluster 44 points in 98 games in the past two seasons. Could he find better health with the Leafs?

Finally, the true prize the Leafs sought was a second round pick in 2017 and Tobias Lindberg. At 20 years-young, Tobias Lindberg is a 2013 102nd overall draft pick who posted 78 points in 67 games played for the Oshawa Generals. He had a productive 2015 playoffs, providing an offensive punch of 19 points in 21 games for the CHL champs. 2015-16 has seen Lindberg adapt to playing against tougher opponents in the AHL, where he has posted a good five goals and seventeen assists in 34 games played.

The second round pick is up in the air. The Leafs could have previously used one draft pick to become two picks, as seen when the picks that became Travis Dermott and Jeremy Bracco were traded to the Leafs for Philadelphia’s 24th overall draft pick that became Travis Konecny.

Who’s next?
