Gambling Protection

2017 might be the year of the Expansion Draft. Las Vegas might be the first expansion team that will be granted an expansion draft. Per Lighthouse Hockey and Darren Dreger of TSN, the basic outline before the expansion draft will be as follows:

  • Teams can protect either 3 defensemen, 7 forwards and 1 goalie, or 8 skaters and 1 goalie, per Darren Dreger.
  • However: Teams can only lose one player per expansion team. (So if there’s only one team, you only lose one player).
  • Prospects and “first- and second-year pros” are exempt and don’t need to be protected.

2017 might be the year of the Expansion Draft. Las Vegas might be the only team that will be granted an expansion draft. If so Which players will be protected by each Canadian NHL team?

Montreal Canadiens

Carey Price, PK Subban, Jeff Petry, Nathan Beaulieu, Max Pacioretty, Brendan Gallagher, Alex Galchenyuk, Lars Eller, and one of Tomas Plekanec or Andrei Markov.

Big surprise on the last two, eh? Jokes aside, should the Canadiens let their longest serving veterans go.

Ottawa Senators

Craig Anderson, Erik Karlsson, Dion Phaneuf, Cody Ceci, Kyle Turris, Mike Hoffman, Mika Zibanejad, Mark Stone, and Bobby Ryan.

What if the Sens don’t protect Dion Phaneuf to relieve themselves of cap space?

Toronto Maple Leafs

Jonathan Bernier, Morgan Rielly, Jake Gardiner, Frank Corrado, Milan Michalek, James van Riemsdyk, Leo Komarov, P.A. Parenteau, and Peter Holland.

With the Leafs, most of the core that the Leafs will want to protect is on their back end. William Nylander, Nikita Soshnikov and other young forwards don’t have to be protected as outlined above.

Winnipeg Jets

Tyler Myers, Jacob Trouba, Dustin Byfuglien, Mark Scheifele, Blake Wheeler, Bryan Little, Marko Dano, and Alex Burmistrov.

Do the Jets really need to protect their goalies? They might as well donate Pavelec and call up Connor Hellebuyck.

Calgary Flames

Mark Giordano, Dougie Hamilton, T.J Brodie, Jyrki Jokipakka, Sam Bennet, Sean Monahan, Johnny Guadreau, Michael Frolik, and one of either Mikael Backlund or Lance Bouma.

It’s time to hold onto the youth, and somehow find a goalie. Maybe Jonathan Bernier?

Edmonton Oilers

Cam Talbot, Andrej Sekera, Oscar Klefbom, Eric Gryba, Benoit Pouliot, Jordan Eberle, Taylor Hall, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Nail Yakupov, and maybe Connor McDavid.

Maybe Connor McDavid. Just maybe.

Vancouver Canucks

(One of) Ryan Miller or Jacob Markstrom, Chris Tanev, Dan Hamhuis, Henk and Dan, Jake Virtanen, Bo Horvat, Sven Baertschi, and Brandon Sutter.

Imagine if Markus Granlund is taken in the expansion draft. The Shinkaruk-Granlund trade would’ve really paid off.

Are there any players that should not have been listed? How about players that should have been listed? How many teams do you think will be included in expansion?
